Competition Winner Emma Coles, Brings Five’s Plus Size Patient CPD to Cardiff Team

Five by Winncare recently had the pleasure of delivering their Plus Size Patient Manual Handling CPD training day in Cardiff, following Emma Coles' competition win at the OTAC Cardiff Conference late last year.

The exclusive prize provided Emma and her colleagues with an immersive, hands-on learning experience right before the Easter bank holiday weekend — and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Held in Cardiff, the full-day course delivered eight hours of accredited CPD, including practical modules on flat lifting, hoisting, in-bed manoeuvres, assisted walking and lateral transfers utilising Five’s rental equipment portfolio.

Designed to support professionals working with plus size patients, the session combined clinical insight with lived experience to enhance both empathy and technique in complex manual handling situations.

Emma Coles shared her thoughts on the experience:

“I'm really pleased to have been able to share the day with the team, learn different things about manual handling, broaden my knowledge and chat about different cases we have come across.”

Her colleagues were equally enthusiastic:

"I’ve learnt so much that I’ve never heard in the 25 years I’ve been a trainer. It’s been absolutely wonderful. I’m actually going to change my training content to include some of the things we have seen today."

Another delegate added:

"It's really useful when you’re working with somebody of a larger size to actually experience how some of the movements can be restricted. It gives you much more of an idea of how difficult it is to do some of the manoeuvres. I’d really recommend it."

Lunch was provided as part of the course, creating an engaging and supportive environment where Occupational Therapists and trainers could connect, reflect and collaborate on the challenges and nuances of plus size patient care.

This initiative is part of Five’s ongoing commitment to supporting both OTs and acute clinicians with specialist plus size patient CPD that is both practical and insightful. The company is set to deliver more of these tailored sessions across the UK throughout 2025.
